Akron gets environmental grant

Bridgestone earlier this year agreed to keep making race tires for IndyCar competition through the end of the 2013 race season, which will keep race tire production in Akron for at least two more years. The Ohio State Controlling Board on Monday approved a $300,000 Clean Ohio Assistance Grant to the city of Akron for an additional environmental assessment on Bridgestone Americas' former Akron Technical Center. The city agreed to buy the old technical center for $5 million and then lease the old building back to Bridgestone for its race tire manufacturing division. The grant will cover 84 soil borings and 16 monitoring wells in the Phase 2 assessment of six parcels covering 32. A new 260,000-square-foot technical center at South Main Street and East Wilbeth Road is being built. 41 acres at 1277 Firestone Parkway in South Akron.

The issue concerns the factory-installed Bridgestone Turanza EL42 run-flat tires that exhibited irregular wear causing excessive road noise and needed to be replaced early (before 30,000 miles) due to premature or irregular wear. If the tire wear occurred beyond 10,000 miles up through 30,000 miles, the reimbursement amount will be reduced to 50 percent or less. BMW and Bridgestone have settled a class-action lawsuit stemming from problems with the run-flat tires in 2006 and 2007 BMW 3 Series models. The agreement, which was accepted in New Jersey federal court, ends a 2008 class-action lawsuit and awards members of the settlement class a full refund for the purchase of replacement tires if they were needed before 10,000 miles. The suit argues that BMW and Bridgestone should’ve been aware of the defects.
