Is it safe to use a 17 inch spare with 20 inch tires?

I recently purchased a Lincoln MKX with 20 inch tires and discovered that the spare was only 17 inch. The dealer is saying that it was not a factory error and that using a 17 inch spare with 20 inch tires is safe. Can this be true? Is it really safe

no its not safe. i would find an aftermarket rim and get an tire then use that as your spare.

Instead, a crew from Karey Environmental Services Group is on scene and has begun the process of "capping," or covering the tires with 3-4 feet of dirt, to suffocate the flames and get rid of the smoke. A 10,000-square-foot area full of tires ignited late Monday afternoon at the Arizona Rubber Recycling facility in Maricopa, officials said. Because of environmental concerns and the possibility of oil from the tires seeping into the ground, the flames will not be doused with water. The crew was expected to be finished within three hours, Maricopa Fire Department spokesman Brad Pitassi saidlate Monday night. Crews from the Maricopa Fire Department responded to the facility on Hartman Road. According to Pitassi, wind conditions are ideal and there are no health concerns for residents of Maricopa at this time.
